Toowoomba Rats Of Tobruk Memorial

A stone memorial with a metal plaque inserted in the center was constructed to commemorate.  The siege of Tobruk which took place from 10 April 1941 to 7 December 1941. This memorial is dedicated to the Allied servicemen. Including 782 Australian soldiers who lost their lives during the siege. A significant event as it marked the first defeat of the German Land Forces in World War II. The unveiling of this memorial took place at the Mothers’ Memorial Gardens in Toowoomba on 14 April 1996, with Mr Lachlan Gooch and Mr Roy Milne serving as flag bearers. Additionally, the Rats of Tobruk Association has erected several other memorials around Queensland.

Kaimkillenbun War Memorial (Digger)

The original digger memorial, which featured an Australian soldier in dress uniform standing at ease. Was unveiled by W J Vowles, Leader of the Opposition, on 13 November 1920. The mason responsible for its creation was R C Ziegler of Toowoomba. Unfortunately, the memorial was damaged in a traffic accident. However, an exact replica was created from the original plans and is now located in a park for safety. Adjacent to the memorial, there is a flagpole standing to the left.

Woodend Cemetery

Woodend was initially surveyed in 1836 by Major Thomas Mitchell. Who played a significant role in opening up the area for settlement. On 18 March 1861, a 6-acre site was allocated as a general Cemetery for the town of Woodend. The original Trustees of the Cemetery were selected on 3 April 1861, and a Plot Register was initiated in 1862. This register documented the individuals who reserved plots and the specific locations of these plots within the Cemetery.

Mayor McDonald expressed. Mayor McDonald emphasised that while the services commemorate the ill-fated Gallipoli landing and subsequent campaign in Turkey during World War I. The date has evolved into a broader national memorial day. “These services provide an important opportunity for the city and Region to formally recognise and contemplate the sacrifices made by past generations of servicemen and women from this area,” he remarked. “In addition to acknowledging their selfless actions.
